Some weeks change everything.

Volunteer with West Texas Camps & Retreats and spend four days making a difference in the life of a child who needs it most.                No experience required — just a willing heart.

Why Volunteer?

For many of our campers this is their first time at camp. For some it will be the first time they have ever felt truly included. Your presence — showing up, being patient, and genuinely caring — is what makes that possible.

Volunteers consistently tell us that camp week is one of the most meaningful experiences of their year. We think you will feel the same way.

Volunteer Roles

We have four volunteer roles. Each one is important. Read through them and think about where you might fit best — you can indicate your preference on the application.

Buddy Paired one-on-one with a specific camper for the entire week. You are their consistent, familiar support through every activity, meal, and transition. This is our most important role.

Cabin Hand Supporting camper care within a cabin group. You work alongside Buddies to help the group function smoothly throughout the day and overnight.

Medical Support For licensed medical professionals. You assist with medication administration, first aid, and health monitoring throughout camp alongside our on-site registered nurse.

General Volunteer Activity support, setup, and day-to-day camp operations. If you want to serve but aren’t sure where you fit, this is a great starting point.

What to Expect

Time commitment Five days total — one day for orientation and training, plus four days of camp. Your full presence for all five days is essential for our campers.

Training All volunteers attend a required orientation before camp begins. Date, time, and location will be confirmed during the application process.

Background check Every volunteer must complete a criminal background check including a national sex offender registry search. This exists entirely to protect our campers.

Meals and lodging All meals are provided throughout the week. Buddy volunteers and cabin hands sleep in the same dormitory areas as the campers — you are there to support them around the clock.

Who We Need

We need people from all walks of life — teachers, medical professionals, college students, retirees, church members, and anyone with a heart for kids. You do not need a resume full of special needs experience. You need to show up, pay attention, and genuinely care.

We especially need:

  • Medical professionals — nurses, EMTs, paramedics, doctors
  • Special education teachers and aides
  • Therapists and counselors
  • College students studying education, nursing, or social work
  • Church volunteers with a heart for service
  • Anyone who wants to make a difference

If you are asking yourself whether you are qualified — you probably are. Apply and let us figure it out together.
