What Volunteers Do

Volunteers ages 14 and up provide important interactions with campers, demonstrating love, respect, and acceptance. They are a visible demonstration of God’s love to the campers and their families who will participate during camps at West Texas Camps and Retreats. They will travel with our campers and their families to and from activities. Our volunteers will share friendship, love, and respect for each camper and their families.

Buddies

Completed 10th grade Ages 16 to 25

Buddies

Are you between the ages of 16 and 25 and ready to make a lasting impact? As a Buddy, you'll be matched one-on-one with a special needs camper for the entire week — and your most important job is simply this: be a friend. Some campers are highly independent and just need a genuine companion by their side, while others may need a little extra help with things like getting dressed, eating, or navigating the restroom. No matter the need, you show up with patience, joy, and a heart ready to serve. This is more than volunteering — it's one of the most rewarding weeks of your life.

Cabin Hand

Completed 9th Ages 14-15

Cabin Hand

Are you between the ages of 14 and 17 and looking for a way to make a difference? As a Cabin Hand, you'll jump into the heart of camp life — working side by side with Buddies and Cabin Parents to make sure every camper has the best week of their life. You're the extra set of hands that keeps everything running. You'll partner with the recreation crew to make camp fun, memorable, and full of joy. This is your chance to learn what it truly means to serve, grow skills that will last a lifetime, and take your first step toward becoming a future Buddy.

Medical Staff

Licensed Medical Personnel

Medical Staff

The health and well-being of every camper is our highest priority — and that starts with an exceptional medical team. We invite licensed medical professionals to serve as Volunteer Clinicians, bringing their expertise and compassion to care for our special needs campers. Whether you are a paramedic, nurse, PA, NP, or physician, your skills make a profound difference in the lives of families who trust us with their most precious people. Volunteer Clinicians must hold an active license and a minimum of two years of professional experience. Not a licensed professional? You can still serve as a Clinic Staff Assistant — a role open to any caring adult 18 and up. If you have a heart for service and a calling to care, we would love to have you on our team.

Cabin Parent

Age 22 and up

Cabin Parent

Are you 22 or older and ready to be the heartbeat of cabin life? As a Cabin Parent, you are the steady, caring presence that holds everything together — the one who makes sure every camper feels safe, every volunteer feels supported, and every moment of the week runs smoothly. You'll wear many hats: overseeing your cabin's Buddies and Cabin Hands, handling laundry, passing out snacks, sitting with your cabin during rest time and stepping in wherever camp needs you most. But more than any task on the list, you are an encourager — someone who takes the time to truly know each camper, volunteer, and staff member by name. If you have a nurturing spirit, a servant's heart, and the energy to pour yourself into one incredible week, this role was made for you.

Spiritual Growth

Being a Christian camp for children with special needs, our focus is not on intensive lecture style teaching. Each night we have a joyful time of worship and a Bible study for volunteers. Here they can debrief with their cabins and have a time to get to know each other better and be vulnerable. Volunteers also experience Christ as they love and serve their camper buddy.

Volunteer Mission/Service Opportunities for Groups and Individuals

West Texas Camps and Retreats will provide a unique volunteer opportunity for Church Mission Trips for youth and adults, civic organizations looking for service projects, and individuals needing service hours for school, work, or organizations.
