Camp Life

How Does Camp Work?

West Texas Camps and Retreats is a place where campers can have that same experience no matter their developmental or physical disability. It’s also a place where families can connect with each other and the love of God is demonstrated through practical application.

camper age & ability

Campers are individuals ages 7 and up with a variety of developmental and physical disabilities. They will attend sessions with others of similar abilities.

programs & Activities

Programs and activities are adapted so each person, regardless of their ability, can participate.

Volunteer Buddies

Campers are paired with a volunteer buddy who provides support, love and acceptance.

Campers will learn about God’s love for them as they participate in daily devotions, and worship.

Lodging
Campers, along with their volunteer buddy and camp staff will stay together in a new, spacious, barrier-free lodge and become a Cabin Family. Everything from the beds, showers, toilets, sinks, laundry and living areas will be designed with the camper in mind.

Activities
Cabin families will travel together to and from activities and will participate in a variety of activities. Each recreation activity will have adaptive features so everyone can participate.

Examples of adaptive features are:

  • Fixed Position bow enabling a person to participate in archery.

  • A Zipline Sling/Chair to support a camper on the Zipline.

  • A wheelchair accessible pool allowing everyone to enjoy the water activities.

  • Special saddles to enable all to participle in equestrian activities.
  • Meals
Dining will quickly become a popular camp experience. Each Cabin Family will set together and enjoy family style meals. The kitchen will be able to create special foods accommodating special dietary needs. Extra wide isles will accommodate those in wheelchairs or with mobility challenges
    Buddies
Some campers are very independent and just need a friend while other campers might require more assistance and need help with getting dressed, eating, personal hygiene, activity participation, etc.

Every camper will be paired with a volunteer buddy who is between the ages of 16 and 25. These specially trained helpers will be under the direction of the camp staff and will help provide a memorable camp experience.

    Families

Family camp and retreats will provide encouragement and spiritual growth as parents, caregivers, and siblings attend camp together. As a camp for all abilities, siblings will also be challenged on their level, ensuring everyone has a great experience. Parents and caregivers will be able to connect with others facing similar successes and challenges.
